Saint Platonida of Argeș
Venerable Nun and Princess
Wallachia and Transylvania
Feast day: September 26

A life of faith
Platonida was known as Despina Milița and was the wife of Neagoe Basarab. Her official life remembers support for religious foundations, care for orphans, visits to sick people and food given to hungry people. After her husband’s death and further family losses, she entered monastic life. The account describes prayer, work and encouragement offered to other sisters. She died in 1554 and was buried at Curtea de Argeș.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Platonida used her resources to care for people facing hunger, illness and loss. Consider how your resources could support a person whose needs are easily overlooked.
