Saint Porphyry of Gaza
Bishop
Thessalonica, Jerusalem and Gaza
Feast day: February 26

A life of faith
Porphyry grew up in a wealthy family in Thessalonica and entered monastic life as a young adult. He spent several years in the Egyptian desert before traveling to Jerusalem and living near the Jordan. The received life says his severe exertions and fasting damaged his health, so he returned to Jerusalem. There he met Mark, a calligrapher who became his disciple. Patriarch Hilary ordained Porphyry a priest and entrusted him with the care of the Cross of the Lord. After the bishop of Gaza died, Porphyry traveled to Caesarea and was chosen for that see. He arrived in Gaza with Mark and another companion, Baruch. His later ministry took place amid religious conflict, and the traditional account remembers the growth of the Christian community and the transformation of temples into churches. Porphyry served for many years before dying in old age.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
