Saint Procopius of Caesarea
Martyr
Palestine · Early 4th century
Feast day: July 8

A life of faith
The received life identifies Procopius with Neanius, a man raised in Jerusalem who advanced in imperial service. Sent toward Egypt during persecution, he experienced a vision of Christ that transformed his attitude toward Christians. His refusal to obey the demand for pagan worship led to imprisonment at Caesarea. The narrative associates his new name with an encounter with Christ in prison and remembers his continued confession under interrogation. Other people, including his mother, were moved by his witness. Orthodox commemoration receives this account as the story of a persecutor becoming a believer and enduring martyrdom.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider where loyalty to habit or status has kept you from a needed change. Make one honest correction and let the correction become a beginning rather than an excuse for despair.
