A life of faith

Prokopios became a monk in the region of Decapolis and devoted himself to prayer and fasting. During the controversy over holy images, he defended the distinction between worship offered to God and the honor shown through an icon to the person depicted. His opposition to imperial policy led to arrest, torture, and imprisonment with his fellow monk Basil. After their release, Prokopios returned to monastic life and continued guiding other people in Christian faith and conduct. The Church remembers him as a confessor whose teaching survived the attempt to silence it. His witness joined a considered explanation of icon veneration to personal courage.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Try explaining a cherished practice clearly before defending it emotionally. Prokopios's witness connects careful distinctions with courage and continued teaching after a period of suffering.
