Saint Rafael of Agapia
Monk and hermit
Agapia, Moldavia
Feast day: July 21

A life of faith
Rafael entered the monastic community at Agapia and learned from its experienced elders. After a period of communal life, he withdrew into the surrounding mountains for prayer. He later guided brothers in the community and welcomed people from nearby villages who sought counsel and help. The calendar acknowledges that many details of his life remain unknown, while preserving his reputation as a spiritual father.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Rafael’s example invites a life of prayer that also leaves room to guide and welcome people who seek help.
