A life of faith

Romanus came from Emesa and served the Church in Constantinople. His traditional life remembers a young church servant deeply distressed after public ridicule of his reading and singing. In prayer he received encouragement, and the account associates his gift for hymn writing with a vision of the Mother of God. He became a deacon and teacher of song, composing hymns that helped Christians hear the Gospel through worship. Romanus’s example gives hope to someone whose first efforts disappoint: a gift can develop into generous service when discouragement is brought to prayer rather than allowed to silence the person.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Return patiently to a useful skill that discouragement made you abandon. Practice one small part, seek kind instruction, and let the work become an offering rather than a performance.
