A life of faith

Sabbas was born in eastern Thrace and entered monastic life on Mount Athos, where he learned icon painting and Byzantine music. He later lived in Palestine and spent time on Patmos and Aegina. On Aegina he became close to Nektarios and painted an icon of him after his death. Sabbas eventually settled at the monastery of All Saints on Kalymnos. There he offered counsel and consolation to the nuns and islanders while maintaining a life of prayer. He died in 1948 and is remembered as a patron of Kalymnos.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
