Saint Samuel the Prophet
Prophet
Israel · Biblical era
Feast day: August 20

A life of faith
Samuel was the son for whom Hannah had prayed, and she entrusted him to service at Shiloh under the priest Eli. The biblical account remembers his calling while still a child and the instruction to listen for God’s voice. He became a prophet and judge during Israel’s transition toward monarchy. He anointed Saul and later David, and David found refuge with him while threatened by Saul. Samuel’s own family difficulties also belong to the story, preventing a simple picture of effortless leadership. Orthodox remembrance places attentive prayer beside the demanding work of guiding a community through change.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Practice listening before giving advice. Make room for prayer and careful attention, especially when another person faces a decision whose consequences you cannot control.
