A life of faith

Sarah was Abraham’s wife and the mother of Isaac. Originally called Sarai, she received the name Sarah within the biblical account of God’s promise to Abraham’s household. The visitors at Mamre announced that she would bear a son, although both she and Abraham were old. Her first response was disbelief, but the promise was fulfilled in Isaac’s birth. The OCA life also points to the New Testament’s remembrance of her faith. Orthodox Christians commemorate her among the holy Forefathers, receiving her story within the long preparation for Christ rather than treating her motherhood as a standard every woman must meet.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Allow prayer to include uncertainty. Listen kindly when another person struggles with hope, and avoid measuring anyone’s faith or worth by marriage or parenthood.
