A life of faith

Sava served as a priest before becoming metropolitan of Transylvania. He encouraged the use of Romanian in worship and preaching and worked with assemblies of clergy to guide church ministry. Pressure from the authorities intensified because he maintained Orthodox teaching. Removed from office, he suffered imprisonment and repeated beatings in old age. The calendar remembers his long pastoral service and endurance.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Sava’s life encourages steady care for a community and the courage to maintain a considered conviction under pressure.
