Russia and Sofia · 1881–1950
Feast day: February 26

A life of faith
Seraphim, born Nicholas Sobolev in Ryazan, taught in theological schools before becoming a bishop. In Voronezh he organized help for poor students and opened dining facilities. After leaving Russia, he settled in Sofia in 1921 and guided Russian Orthodox communities in Bulgaria. His ministry included arranging hospital care and accommodation for refugees, teaching and spiritual counsel. He died in Sofia in 1950 and was canonized jointly by the Bulgarian and Russian Orthodox Churches in 2016.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
