A life of faith

Sergius began an ascetic life in the forests near Radonezh, where a small church dedicated to the Trinity became the center of a growing monastic community. As others gathered, he continued doing ordinary work: building cells, carrying water, baking bread, and preparing food. His traditional life remembers both prayer and a reluctance to seek rank. Later generations revered him as a major guide of Russian monastic life. Sergius offers an example of leadership expressed through shared labor. Responsibility for a community can be carried with humility when its leader remains willing to serve alongside everyone else.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Take on an ordinary task that helps a community function. Work without seeking credit, and notice whether sharing the labor changes the way you understand leadership and belonging.
