Saint Sergius the Martyr
Military official and martyr
Syria · early Christian period
Feast day: October 7

A life of faith
Sergius and Bacchus held senior military positions but were secretly Christian. When ordered to take part in sacrifice, they refused. They were stripped of their rank, publicly humiliated, and sent to a governor in Syria. After Bacchus died under beating, Sergius endured further punishment and was executed at Resafa. The calendar remembers both their shared confession and their distinct deaths.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Sergius’s example invites a conviction that remains steady when status and security are taken away.
