A life of faith

Simeon began life tending sheep and was deeply moved by hearing the Beatitudes. He sought explanation from an experienced elder before entering monastic life. His later search for solitude led to the unusual practice of prayer on a pillar, from which he also addressed the people who came to him. The received life remembers his willingness to obey visiting elders who tested whether his discipline had become self-will. Crowds, clergy, and public leaders encountered his witness. Orthodox remembrance honors his prayer and endurance while locating his distinctive ascetic practice within the guidance and scrutiny of the Church.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Ask for wise guidance before adopting a demanding spiritual practice. Let steady prayer and willingness to receive correction matter more than an unusual outward achievement.
