Saints Sophia and her daughters Faith, Hope and Love
Martyrs
Rome · 2nd century
Feast day: September 17

A life of faith
The traditional account of Sophia and her daughters remembers a Christian widow raising Faith, Hope, and Love in devotion to Christ. Brought before the emperor Hadrian, the children would not offer pagan sacrifice. Their mother endured the anguish of their deaths and buried them outside Rome, where she also died soon afterward. The Church honors all four together as martyrs. Their names express the Christian virtues that frame their remembrance. This account asks readers to meet family suffering with reverence and compassion, without treating the children’s persecution as an example to reproduce or romanticize.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Pray for children and families facing persecution, loss, or fear. Offer support that protects life and dignity; the Church’s remembrance of suffering calls for compassion and care.
