Saint Sophia of Ainos
Venerable Mother
Thrace
Feast day: June 4

A life of faith
Sophia of Ainos lived in Thrace, where marriage and the care of six children formed her early adult life. After illness took her husband and children, she turned her grief toward the needs of other families. The Orthodox account remembers her sheltering orphans, supporting widows, and using her property for people in poverty. Prayer and the Psalms accompanied this practical generosity. She received monastic tonsure near the end of her life, after years of service outside a monastery. Often remembered as a mother of orphans, Sophia offers an example of love that continues to make room for neighbors after devastating loss.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Grief can leave little strength for large gestures. Sophia's example invites one manageable act of care for a neighbor, without demanding that sorrow disappear first.
