A life of faith

Spyridon worked as a shepherd and shared his resources with neighbors and people without homes. After his wife’s death he became bishop of Tremithus in Cyprus, but his traditional life emphasizes that he retained a simple manner of living. The Church remembers his hospitality, care for his flock, and many accounts of help through prayer. He is also associated with the defense of the faith at Nicaea. Spyridon’s example is approachable in its everyday generosity: a position of responsibility need not erase kindness, direct speech, or the willingness to welcome a tired stranger.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Notice a person who needs a welcome rather than an impressive explanation. Offer practical hospitality within your means, remembering that simplicity and generosity can accompany serious responsibility.
