Saint Stephen of Sourozh
Hierarch and Confessor
Cappadocia, Constantinople, and Sourozh
Feast day: December 15

A life of faith
Stephen came from Cappadocia and received education in Constantinople before entering monastic life. After a period of solitude, Patriarch Germanus appointed him bishop of Sourozh, the Crimean city now called Sudak. His ministry later brought him into conflict with the imperial campaign against icons. Stephen refused orders to remove the holy images from churches and was taken to Constantinople, where he endured imprisonment and torture. After his release, he returned to his congregation rather than remaining away from the place he had served. His commemoration remembers a bishop whose confession of faith and responsibility for his community continued through political persecution.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how a conviction relates to responsibility for other people. Stephen's return to his congregation places continued pastoral service beside the courage remembered in his imprisonment.
