A life of faith

Stephen was one of the seven men chosen for the early Church’s diaconal ministry at Jerusalem. He preached from Scripture and defended his faith before the council. The account in Acts remembers his death by stoning and his prayer that the offence of those killing him would not be held against them. His burial is linked in tradition with Gamaliel.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Read Stephen’s final prayer in Acts. Ask how you can practice forgiveness while remaining honest about harm and the need for justice.
