Saint Stephen of Tronoša
Archimandrite, teacher and martyr
Tekeriš, Tronoša and Zvornik
Feast day: September 17 (Gregorian); September 4 (Julian)

A life of faith
Stephen Jovanović was born in Tekeriš in 1759 and learned to read at Tronoša Monastery, where he became a monk and archimandrite. His pupil Vuk Karadžić later remembered his teaching after the liturgy, including lessons about faith, honesty and unity. Stephen also became involved in the political struggles of his time. During a famine, he went to the pasha at Zvornik to seek a grain loan for the people, to be repaid after the next harvest. His received life records that he was poisoned during that visit and died in 1799.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
