Saint Sylvester of Rome
Bishop of Rome
Rome
Feast day: January 2

A life of faith
Sylvester grew up in Rome and learned the Christian faith under a priest named Quirinus. The calendar remembers his help for Christians facing persecution. After Miltiades died, Sylvester became bishop of Rome. He provided guidance for the Church and defended Christian teaching about Christ. He died in 335.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Sylvester invites reflection on combining clear teaching with practical protection for people under pressure.
