Saint Telemachus of Rome
Monastic martyr
Rome · early 5th century
Feast day: January 1

A life of faith
Telemachus was an ascetic from the East who traveled to Rome. Theodoret’s account describes him entering an arena to stop men fighting one another. Spectators killed him, and the account connects his death with Emperor Honorius ending gladiatorial combat. The Church remembers him as a martyr whose intervention sought to protect human life.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Peace asks us to recognize the humanity of people others treat as entertainment. Telemachus invites care for those exposed to violence, without treating danger as something to seek.
