Saint Thaddeus of Edessa
Apostle of the Seventy
Edessa and Jerusalem
Feast day: August 21

A life of faith
Thaddeus came from Edessa and received baptism from John the Baptist before following Christ. The calendar identifies him among the Seventy and remembers his return to Edessa. There he stayed with Tobias, ministered to sick people and taught Abgar and others about Christ.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Thaddeus connects teaching with care for people who are sick or seeking understanding.
