Saint Theodora of Sihla
Desert ascetic
Romania · 17th–18th centuries
Feast day: August 7

A life of faith
Theodora was born in the Neamț region of Romania. After a period of marriage, she and her husband agreed to enter monasteries. Invasion later forced her and her spiritual mother into the mountains. With the counsel of monastic elders, Theodora eventually settled near Sihla, where she lived in solitude and received occasional visits from her confessor. When displaced nuns needed shelter, she gave them her cell and moved to a cave. Her traditional life culminates in receiving Communion before her death. The Church remembers sustained prayer joined to humility and hospitality in hardship.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
