Saint Theodora the Restorer of Icons
Empress
Constantinople · 9th century
Feast day: February 11

A life of faith
Theodora was the wife of Emperor Theophilus, whose opposition to icons she did not share. She continued to venerate icons privately. After his death, she governed as regent while their son Michael was a child. Her support for a council helped restore the public veneration of icons, remembered in the annual Triumph of Orthodoxy. When her period of government ended, she spent years in a monastery, devoted to prayer and spiritual reading. Her life brings together public responsibility, fidelity during disagreement, and the quieter discipline of devotion beyond the imperial court.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how responsibility can serve the Church and your neighbors. Make time for learning and prayer even when a public role occupies much of your attention.
