Saint Theodora, Wife of Justinian
Empress
Constantinople · 6th century
Feast day: November 14

A life of faith
Theodora was the wife of Emperor Justinian and an influential figure in sixth-century Byzantine government. The OCA remembrance describes her repentance and her role as a political adviser, including during the Nika crisis. A modern Greek Orthodox Archdiocese account also remembers her use of authority against forced prostitution and the trafficking of young women, connecting her memory with a ministry for survivors. Her life belongs to a complex imperial setting rather than a simple account of private devotion. Orthodox Christians commemorate her with Justinian, while distinguishing her from the later empress Theodora associated with the restoration of holy icons.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how influence can protect a person exposed to exploitation. Support a responsible act of care that respects the survivor’s freedom and does not demand gratitude or disclosure.
