A life of faith

Theodore and his younger brother Theophanes received education at the monastery of Mar Saba and became monks. Sent from Jerusalem to Constantinople, they defended the veneration of icons before imperial authorities. Theodore answered arguments against icons and refused offers of freedom that required accepting iconoclast communion. Repeated exile and imprisonment followed. The brothers received the name Graptoi, or Branded, after verses mocking their confession were inscribed on their faces. Theodore died in captivity before the restoration of icon veneration. His commemoration remembers a learned monk whose conviction remained firm under direct pressure, while his brother's later episcopal work belongs to a separate life.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider the relationship between understanding and conviction. Theodore's story invites careful study and courage without treating the suffering inflicted by persecutors as something to seek.
