Saint Theodore Stratelates
Soldier and martyr
Heraclea · Early 4th century
Feast day: February 8

A life of faith
Theodore Stratelates is remembered as a military commander at Heraclea who confessed Christian faith during the reign of Licinius. The received life joins his public witness with generosity to the poor. Refusal to submit to the emperor’s religious demands brought arrest and torture, followed by further confession and execution. A significant episode has Theodore restrain Christians who wished to retaliate, recalling Christ’s refusal of revenge. His servant Varus is associated with preserving the account. Orthodox commemoration honors him among the soldier martyrs while distinguishing him from Theodore the Recruit, who has a separate life and feast.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Meet pressure with steadiness rather than retaliation. Defend a just conviction while refusing to make another person’s suffering the proof of your own strength.
