Saint Theodore Ushakov the Admiral
Righteous Admiral
Russia and Sanaxar
Feast day: October 2

A life of faith
Theodore Ushakov served as a Russian naval commander before retiring near Sanaxar Monastery. The OCA's account remembers his encouragement of Orthodox Christians on Corfu as well as the charitable life that followed his military career. He attended church on Sundays and feast days, spent Lent with the monks, supported the monastery, and gave alms to people in need. These actions, rather than victory at sea alone, explain the spiritual emphasis of his commemoration. He died in 1817 and was buried beside the monastery church. His identity must be distinguished from his relative Theodore of Sanaxar, who was a monk.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how your work and retirement can leave room for worship and generosity. Theodore's commemoration points toward concrete charitable actions beyond a person's public reputation.
