Saint Theonas the Martyr
Martyr
Nicomedia
Feast day: January 5

A life of faith
Theonas practiced magic and was summoned during the persecution of Bishop Theopemptus. The account describes his encounter with the imprisoned bishop as the turning point in his life. He became Christian and received baptism from Theopemptus. When ordered to abandon that faith, Theonas refused and was killed.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Theonas invites reflection on allowing an encounter with another person to challenge a settled way of life.
