A life of faith

Theophan Govorov served as a teacher, missionary in Jerusalem, and bishop before retiring to Vysha Monastery. As bishop of Tambov and later Vladimir, he visited parishes and established schools for girls. His eventual reclusion did not end his care for others: he answered a large daily correspondence and wrote practical books about Christian life, repentance, and resistance to despair. He also translated spiritual works, including the Philokalia. Money sent to him largely became alms, and he sought to keep his books affordable. Prayer, study, and patient written counsel became the principal form of his pastoral service.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Make room for quiet prayer and careful reading. Use what you learn to offer one person a thoughtful answer rather than a hurried reaction.
