Saint Theophanes Graptus of Nicaea
Hierarch and Hymnographer
Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Nicaea
Feast day: October 11

A life of faith
Theophanes was the younger brother of Theodore Graptus. Educated in philosophy, he entered monastic life at Mar Saba and later became a priest. The brothers traveled to Constantinople to defend the veneration of icons and suffered imprisonment, exile, and the facial inscriptions that gave them the name Branded. Theophanes survived his brother and returned after the restoration of icon veneration. He became Bishop of Nicaea and composed canons, including hymns explaining and celebrating the place of icons in Orthodox worship. His life joins endurance with constructive teaching: the words of a persecuted confessor later helped the Church give voice to its faith.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Use an experience of difficulty to deepen useful work rather than define your whole identity. Theophanes's hymns turned theological conviction into words a community could pray together.
