Saint Theophano the Empress
Righteous Empress
Constantinople
Feast day: December 16

A life of faith
Theophano married the future Emperor Leo VI in Constantinople. The couple endured imprisonment after Leo was accused of plotting against his father. Following her release, Theophano became known for prayer and generous care for people outside the palace. The OCA remembers assistance to widows, orphans, persecuted households, and grieving neighbors, alongside support for churches and monasteries. She dressed simply when visiting people in need and resisted the public honor of a church bearing her own name. Her life shows an imperial household becoming a place of service. Orthodox Christians honor her modesty and mercy amid both privilege and personal hardship.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Think about the access or resources entrusted to you. Theophano's example asks how those advantages can become quiet help for people who receive little attention.
