A life of faith

Theophilus came from the region of Tiberiopolis and entered monastic life under Stephen the Hermit. During persecution against icons he was brought to trial at Nicaea. The calendar remembers his explanation of the veneration of icons persuading the judge, who allowed him to depart.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Theophilus recalls the value of explaining a belief carefully when another person misunderstands it.
