Saint Valentina of Caesarea
Martyr
Caesarea, Palestine
Feast day: February 10

A life of faith
Valentina was a Christian woman from Caesarea, commemorated with Enatha of Gaza and the martyr Paul. The received account describes her distress at the torture of Enatha. When ordered to sacrifice, Valentina kicked over the altar and its fire. She too was tortured, and the governor condemned both women to death by burning.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Valentina’s story confronts the cruelty of public punishment. Consider how to speak against another person’s mistreatment while choosing a response that does not create further harm.
