Saint Visarion of Lainici
Venerable Martyr
Lainici, Romania
Feast day: November 10

A life of faith
Visarion, born Gheorghe Toia, first trained as a church singer and entered monastic life at Frăsinei. Appointed abbot of Lainici in 1929, he faced the task of rebuilding a community and monastery damaged by war. He established a common prayer rule, taught church singing, and helped organize a hospital for workers in the Jiu Valley. The official life describes his effort to calm an abusive officer with humane words before suffering a violent assault. His injuries required amputation, and he died in 1951. The Romanian Church remembers him as a monastic martyr.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Community renewal can include both prayer and practical care. Visarion's work connected rebuilding a monastery with teaching and provision for injured workers.
