Saint Zechariah, Father of John the Baptist
Priest and martyr
Jerusalem
Feast day: September 5

A life of faith
Zechariah was a priest at the Temple in Jerusalem and the husband of Elizabeth. During his service at the altar, an angel announced that they would have a son, John. The Church’s tradition remembers Zechariah’s death at the Temple during Herod’s search for the child.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
His remembrance connects the service of the Temple with the family of John the Baptist.
