Saint Zosimas of Solovki
Venerable Abbot
Lake Onega and Solovki
Feast day: April 17

A life of faith
Zosimas gave away his property and entered monastic life before seeking solitude near the White Sea. Herman, who had earlier lived on Solovki with Sabbatius, guided him toward the islands. Together they built cells and cultivated the ground. As more monks arrived, Zosimas helped establish a church, common meals, and a shared rule of life. The brothers eventually chose him as abbot. When powerful people interfered with the monastery's fishing, he traveled to Novgorod to seek protection and negotiate for the community. His life remembers the practical work of building and sustaining a monastery in a demanding northern environment.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Think about the shared systems that let a community endure. Zosimas's work included cultivation, meals, worship, and negotiation rather than a single dramatic achievement.
