Saint Joseph the Hesychast

August 16

Joseph, born Francis Kottis on Paros, worked to support his family before seeking monastic life on Mount Athos. He searched for guidance in the Jesus Prayer and formed a lasting companionship with the monk Arsenios. After receiving instruction from older elders, he led a small brotherhood devoted to prayer and watchfulness. The community lived at Saint Basil’s Skete and Little Saint Anne’s before moving to New Skete as health difficulties increased. His disciples later guided monasteries in Greece and abroad. His letters continue to communicate the spiritual experience of a life shaped by attention, perseverance, and dependence on God.

Saint Hilda of Whitby

November 17

Hilda belonged to the Northumbrian royal family and received Christian baptism at York while young. She later entered religious life and became abbess of the community at Whitby, where men and women lived under her spiritual care. Her monastery hosted the Synod of Whitby in 664, when church leaders debated differing practices, including the calculation of Pascha. The Orthodox parish account also remembers her support for future missionary bishops and her recognition of Caedmon’s gift for composing scriptural songs. Her legacy joins learning, discernment, and the ability to nurture another person’s vocation within a shared life of prayer.

Sources & calendar notes

The directory indexes the OCA full-year calendar, including leap-day commemorations, alongside additional researched profiles. Calendar entries include individual saints, groups, icons and feasts. An entry count is not a count of unique saints. Categories are provisional; follow the linked source.

Dates show commemorations in the referenced calendar year. Movable feasts change annually, and local calendars may differ. Additional jurisdictions, original biographies and icon research remain in progress. This collection does not yet claim complete Eastern Orthodox coverage.

Calendar metadata was retrieved through Orthocal’s source repository and the Orthodox Church in America. Source-only calendar records link to their original accounts; researched profiles include individually sourced artwork.
